Teaching & Speaking
I teach, guest lecture, and speak on digital strategy, editorial leadership, storytelling, and building systems that center audience trust and inclusion.
Experience
I work with students and emerging professionals to build skills in content strategy, editorial leadership, and digital storytelling. I am also available to speak at conferences and industry events.
Selected teaching experiences include:
2020-2023: Associate Faculty, Strategic Communication program at Columbia University School of Professional Studies — I taught in the graduate-level Strategic Communication course "COMM5025: Strategic Communication Management,” “COMM5080: Authentic Leadership,” and “BUSI5010: Managing Human Behavior in the Organization.”
2020: Guest Lecturer, Girls Write Now — I created the curriculum and taught a course to bring high school students from no audio experience to producing a podcast trailer and preparing a podcast wireframe at Girls Write Now’s campus in Manhattan. It covered the fundamentals of audio storytelling, best practices for recording, best practices for interviewing, and how to use an iPhone/Android app to produce and distribute podcasts.
2018: Lecturer, Made in NY Media Center by IFP — I taught classes on digital media engagement, personal branding, podcasting, and social media strategy to small and large groups at the Made in NY Media Center DUMBO campus in Brooklyn and at Comcast LIFT Labs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“I have taken classes in the past on social media and branding, i.e., NYU and other institutions, and this was by far the best. She prepared very thoughtful, well organized, and quality slide decks. … I feel her background in radio and stortytelling provided lots of added value as she was easily able to speak to ‘how’ you craft your presence online. … Kelly was quickly able to guide each student on how to refine their story, which was impressive considering the variety of backgrounds. I gained a lot from this course and recommend this class to others.”
2017: Panel Speaker, MJ Bear Panel at the Online News Association Conference—Washington, D.C.
2017: Moderator, A Conversation with young adult author Stephanie Perkins about her new release “There’s Someone Inside Your House” — St. Peters, MO.
2011-2013: Teaching Assistant, Participatory Journalism, University of Missouri-Columbia—I was a teaching assistant and assistant director of community outreach for “J4700: Participatory Journalism” at the University of Missouri Journalism School. I assisted in grading, course teaching, and editing/supervising newsroom work surrounding community engagement in journalism.
