With wide-ranging experience in social media management, audio production and multimedia storytelling, I am available to teach a range of classes.

I teach for a wide variety of student audiences — from teenagers, to college students, to working professionals. I’ve worked in high school, non-profit, university, media organizations and co-working spaces.

I’m available to teach courses I’ve previously prepared or create bespoke courses for your organization, non-profit or school. Please reach out to me at kmarie.moffitt@gmail.com to start the conversation.

Read below for examples of classes I’ve taught over the years.

Strategic Communication Management

I am the Course Associate, or co-teacher, in a graduate-level, required course in the M.S. in Strategic Communication program at the Columbia University School of Professional Studies. The course introduces students to key concepts in communication management, including:

  • How to plan, measure and pitch strategic communication initiatives

  • Assessing organizational needs, identifying stakeholders, and drafting messaging that speaks credibly to a variety of constituencies, both internal and external

This class emphasizes essential business skills, such as interpreting financial reports and understanding the language of business leaders, in order to address business challenges through strategic communication.

Podcasting for Teens

A course that brings high school students from no knowledge about audio storytelling to recording a podcast trailer and formatting a podcast episode in three hours. Students learn:

  • Fundamentals of audio storytelling

  • Best practices for recording

  • Best practices for interviewing

  • How to use iPhone & Android app Anchor to produce and distribute podcasts

Most recently taught: January 2020, two weekends, four sessions at Girls Write Now in New York, NY.

Mastering Your Brand Story Across Digital Media

A course that teaches entrepreneurs, creatives and college students how to leverage different digital media (social media, website, newsletter, etc.) to promote a brand or personal story. Through exercises and group work, students learn to craft a brand story on digital media in various formats (two-hour, two times a week for three weeks; one, three-hour course).

Most recently taught: March 2019 (LIFT Your Story: Mastering Your Brand Story Across Digital Media) in partnership with Comcast NBCUniversal Lift Labs Freelancers Hub in Philadelphia, PA and New York, NY; December 2018 at Made in NY Media Center in New York, NY.

Of the course, one participant wrote:

I have taken classes in the past on social media and branding, i.e., NYU and other institutions, and this was by far the best. She prepared very thoughtful, well organized and quality slide decks. … I feel her background in radio and stortytelling provided lots of added value as she was easily able to speak to 'how' you craft your presence online. … Kelly was quickly able to guide each student on how to refine their story, which was impressive considering the variety of backgrounds. I gained a lot from this course and recommend this class to others.

Participatory Journalism

I was a teaching assistant and assistant director of community outreach for J4700: Participatory Journalism at University of Missouri Journalism School. I assisted in grading, course teaching and hands-on work editing and supervising newsroom work surrounding community engagement in journalism.

Most recently taught: From 2011-2013, Columbia, MO.
